  Natural Remedies

Stephanie Kaye joins curator Sidney Pink, on WAMU's Metro Connection for a sneak peek at the new exhibition,'Natural Remedies.'

The show is made up of the works of two Charm City artists; Caitlin Cunningham and Alex Ebstein. Together they do away with medicine's sometimes antiseptic quality - and replace that with some psychedelic imagery.

Click here to listen to the radio story.

You can see 'Natural Remedies' through May 30th at the John Fonda Gallery, located at Theatre Project in Baltimore's Mt. Vernon neighborhood.

Interview with Sidney Pink: Ready for Sunny Days Ahead

Interview from www.poketo.com

PK: Hey Sidney! How are you today?

SP: I am feeling good. As spring approaches I am feeling a sense of renewal and a fresh start.

PK: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started with art?

SP: I grew up in Hagerstown, Maryland, which is not far from Baltimore and D.C. I have always had a passion for the visual arts from a young age. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art. That experience exposed me to a lot of different people and ideas. I am always driven to create new work and I am restless when I am not producing new stuff. Every new drawing is a struggle but it is that challenge that makes the process and the product worth it.

PK: Many of your drawings incorporate old sci-fi elements with seemingly ordinary schoolgirls and businessmen looking types. What’s the connection?

SP: My current visual style developed while I was living in Japan. School uniforms and salarymen are common sights in Tokyo. Those types of characters are also very common in anime and manga, which I was exposed to a lot during that time. I like the iconic pop quality that the “school girl” and “man in suit” give to my drawings, but I have tried to make them my own. These characters are sometimes allies in my fictional world, but are often in some kind of conflict. I love everything science fiction so it is natural for me to include it in my work.

PK: Tell us the story about what’s going on in your wallet design for Poketo. Why is the octopus being zapped?

SP: I do have a loose narrative in my mind for my work as a whole, but individual drawings are often created with the visual juxtapositions and line-work in mind. I like the viewer to create the narrative or meaning for themselves.

PK: Where does the schoolgirl in the wallet go to school?

SP: Nishimachi International School.

PK: What are some things, ideas, themes you always try to capture in your art?

SP: I want my work to both evoke meaning for the viewer and function as a beautiful image. Visually speaking, I love spare drawings that invite the viewer into delicate line work and simple forms. In regard to meaning or themes, I often want to create a sense of awkward relationships or moments of tension. I hope to expand my current catalogue of characters and their visual landscape. Eventually I would like to have a body of work that represents a whole reality.

PK: Describe to us your perfect Sunday afternoon.

SP: My perfect Sunday would start with a hike in a park on a warm day with my wife. We would then have lunch at a little café in the city. We would spend the afternoon napping and reading in a sunny room. In the evening we would watch an old black and white movie from the 40’s.

PK: That sounds absolutely perfect. Thanks for the interview!

Giant Robot SF Interview with Sidney Pink

Interview from www.gr-sf.com

GRSF: How long did you live in Japan? What were some of the major influences on you while you were there, and how did that affect your art?

Sidney Pink: I lived in Japan for four years. I found living in a foreign country presents constant challenges, which helped me to change and grow as a person. In regard to my art, I was constantly inspired by Japanese popular culture: everything from manga and anime to street graphics. But I think the subtler tone of gestures and human relationships in my work is a reflection of my experiences in Japan.

GRSF: Your work has an amazingly deep simplicity to it. How can you tell when your work is done, or when there's something left to add?

Sidney Pink: I don't edit myself or think a lot about how much to include in my work. A large part of my working method is to experiment and work without preconceived ideas. There are many drawings that I am often not happy with and decide not to exhibit. Some of my favorite drawings have been born out of accidents or unexpected circumstances while working in my studio. The process and discipline of working are both important parts of creating my work.

GRSF: What are some influences on your art?

Sidney Pink: I look for inspiration in every aspect of my life. For me, being open to influences is a frame-of-mind and something I have to work at. I often look for simple visual relationships and juxtapositions that might be a starting point for a drawing. I am influenced by lines and shapes in my environment, graphics and images in all kinds of media and print, or an image I see in my head while reading a book.

GRSF: Can you tell us about the characters in your art? The schoolgirls, the squids, the men in suits...Do they represent specific things for you each time? Or are we meant to simply interpret them for ourselves, define them in our own way?

Sidney Pink: My drawings have an illustrative quality and sometimes an implied narrative. I want viewers to interpret my work for themselves. I think visually which is often the jumping off point for a drawing. I have found that my final interpretation of meaning for a drawing might be very different from someone else's. I like that ambiguity in my work.

GRSF: How did the GEISAI shows help you as an artist?

Sidney Pink: GEISAI was the highlight and culmination of my experiences in Japan as an artist. Being part of such a high profile event really pushed me to create higher quality work and to further develop my visual style. GEISAI was a great opportunity to network and really get my name out there. GEISAI has an intensity of energy and represents a new kind of discourse in the Japanese art market. It was wonderful to be a part of all that.

GRSF: With all of your work, the titles add so much meaning to the pieces themselves. Do those come after the work is done? Or prior?

Sidney Pink: I write down interesting words and phrases in my notebook as I think of them. Once a drawing is finished I use my collection of notes as ideas for titles. Sometimes I pull phrases directly from the book or use combinations of phrases to create titles. I want my titles to add something to the drawing. I see the title as a little poem that adds layers to a work or raises questions about the meaning of the work.

  GEISAI Museum 2 Wrap Up

Kaikai Kiki has released the GEISAI Museum 2 Wrap Up Press Release.

Here is an excerpt:
” American artist Sidney Pink, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, who moved to Japan four years ago, delighted as his booth completely sold out. His drawings, which depict traditional Japanese schoolgirls crossed with themes from retro science fiction, were purchased by collectors including Sohaku Yamashita of Art Fair Tokyo, and caught the eye of Giant Robot publisher/merchandiser Eric Nakamura. According to Pink, "...GEISAI was not just an opportunity, but a challenge to push myself to the highest level of my abilities as an artist.”
